5 rounds · 3 clue passes · all categories · imposter sees the category

Game length

The game finishes on its own after the last round.

Clue passes before the vote

One pass is a full turn around the table, so each player gives 3 clues per round. More passes give the imposter more rope — and more chances to slip.

Imposter hint

The imposter knows the category but never the word — easier to bluff.

Imposter — a free online secret word party game for 3 to 10 players

Imposter is a fast social deduction game for a group. Everyone is shown the same secret word except one player, who has to bluff through a round of one-word clues without ever revealing that they have no idea what anyone is talking about. Then everybody votes.

How it compares

If you have played The Chameleon or Spyfall, you already know the shape of Imposter: one player is missing the information everyone else has, and the clues that prove you are innocent are the same clues that hand the imposter a way in. The word lists and the scoring are our own.

How to play Imposter

  1. 1Create a room. Open Imposter, pick a name and avatar, create a room, and share the six-character code with 2 to 9 friends.
  2. 2Everyone sees the word — except one. The server deals the secret word privately to every player but one. The imposter is not told who they are up against.
  3. 3Give a one-word clue. In turn, each player says one word related to the secret word. Too specific and you hand it to the imposter; too vague and you look like the imposter.
  4. 4Vote. After the clues, everyone votes for who they think does not know the word.
  5. 5Reveal and score. Catch the imposter and the group scores. The imposter scores for surviving the vote, or for guessing the secret word.
