Rail Baron — a free online railway route-building game for 2 to 5 players

Rail Baron is a route-building game played on a map of North America. Collect coloured train cards, spend them to claim the routes between cities, and try to join the cities named on the destination tickets in your hand before your rivals take the track you were counting on. How it compares

If you have played Ticket to Ride, Rail Baron will feel immediately familiar: collect matching cards, claim the route, complete the tickets nobody else can see. The map, the route network and the ticket deck are our own rather than a copy of any published board.

How to play Rail Baron

  1. 1Create a room. Pick Rail Baron, choose a name and an avatar, and create a room. Share the six-character code.
  2. 2Keep your destination tickets. Everyone is dealt four train cards and three destination tickets. Keep at least two of the three — each names two cities and the points you score for joining them.
  3. 3Take one action a turn. On your turn you either draw two train cards, claim one route, or draw three more destination tickets and keep at least one of them.
  4. 4Draw train cards. Take from the five face-up cards or blind from the deck. A face-up locomotive is wild but costs your whole draw; a locomotive drawn blind counts as one card.
  5. 5Claim a route. Spend cards matching the route's colour and length — locomotives stand in for any colour, and a grey route takes any single colour. Longer routes pay much more: six trains score 15 points.
  6. 6Finish and score. When a player is down to two trains everyone gets one last turn. Completed tickets add their points, missed ones subtract them, and the longest unbroken line of track is worth a 10-point bonus.

Rail Baron — frequently asked questions

How many players does Rail Baron need?

Two to five.

Can I play Rail Baron offline?

Yes. Pass-and-play mode runs in your browser at /games/rail-baron/local — one device, humans and bots, and the game is saved if you refresh.

What happens if I do not complete a destination ticket?

Its points are subtracted from your score at the end of the game, so take on only the tickets you can realistically build.

Can two players claim the same route?

No. Some city pairs have two parallel routes, but a player can never own both sides, and with two or three players only one side of each pair can be built at all.
