Pishpirik

The traditional Balkan card game of matching and sweeping. Play a card that matches the one showing to take the whole pile, use a jack to take any pile, and clear a lone card for a 10-point Pishpirik. Two players head to head, or four in partnerships.

Pishpirik — the free online Balkan card game for 2 or 4 players

Pishpirik is the traditional Balkan card game of matching and sweeping, played with a standard 52-card deck by two players head to head or four in partnerships. Play a card of the same rank as the one showing on the table and the whole pile is yours; clear a table holding a single card and you have a Pishpirik. Play it in the browser against a friend on their own device, in a four-player 2v2 where partners play across the table, or pass one phone back and forth.

How it compares

If you have played Pişti in Turkey, Bastra in the Balkans or Casino anywhere else, Pishpirik is the same family of sweeping games and the same deck. The rules here follow the traditional scoring — a point for every ace, ten, jack, queen, king and the two of clubs, two for the ten of diamonds, and three for taking most of the pack.

How to play Pishpirik

  1. 1Open a table. Pick Pishpirik, choose a name, and create a room and share the six-character code.
  2. 2Look at the deal. Four cards go face up on the table and four to each player. The card on top of the table pile is what you are trying to match.
  3. 3Play a card. On your turn play exactly one card. Match the rank showing and you take the whole pile; a jack takes any pile at all.
  4. 4Call Pishpirik. Capture a table holding exactly one card and you score a 10-point Pishpirik — 20 if the lone card was a jack and you matched it.
  5. 5Play out the deck. When both hands are empty, four more cards are dealt to each player. When the deck runs out the last player to capture takes what is left.
  6. 6Count the score. Every ace, ten, jack, queen, king and the two of clubs scores one, the ten of diamonds scores two, and three more go to whoever captured most cards — 25 points in all.

Pishpirik — frequently asked questions

How do you win at Pishpirik?

By capturing the most valuable cards, not simply the most cards. Every ace, ten, jack, queen, king and the two of clubs is worth a point, the ten of diamonds is worth two, and three more go for taking more than half the pack — 25 in a deal, plus ten for every Pishpirik.

What is a Pishpirik?

Clearing a table that holds exactly one card by matching its rank. It is worth 10 bonus points, or 20 when the lone card was a jack and you took it with another jack.

What do jacks do?

A jack captures the table pile whatever is showing on it, which makes it the most useful card in your hand. Taking a single non-jack with a jack is an ordinary capture, not a Pishpirik.

Can two people play on one phone?

Yes. Pass and play deals both hands on a single device and hides each player's cards behind a curtain while the phone changes hands. It is for two players; the four-player game is online only.

Can four people play Pishpirik in teams?

Yes. Four players play 2v2: pick a partner in the room and they confirm, then partners sit across the table so the player after you is always an opponent. Your side pools everything it captures and shares one score, but you cannot see your partner's hand — only the cards they play.

Do I need an account to play?

No. You can play as a guest straight away. Signing in only adds your finished games to your match history and the leaderboard.
