Zhol — free online Kosovar fourteen-card rummy for 2 to 6 players

Zhol is the rummy played around tables in Kosovo and Albania: fourteen cards each, two packs and four jokers, and an opening that has to be worth at least 51 points. Draw, build sets and runs, open, then sell your cards onto everyone's combinations until you can throw your last one — or wait, and go out all at once without opening for a hunt that costs the whole table double. Seven rounds; the lowest total wins.

How it compares

If you have played Rummy you know the bones: draw, discard, sets and runs. Zhol adds the 51-point opening that rises with every opening after it, laying off on other players' cards, buying a joker back by giving the card it stands for, and the hunt — going out in one go before anyone sees your hand.

How to play Zhol

  1. 1Open a table. Pick Zhol, enter your name, and create a room for up to six players.
  2. 2Cut and deal. The player before the dealer cuts: the card it shows lies face up under the deck, and any joker it turns up is theirs. Everyone gets fourteen cards; the starter gets fifteen.
  3. 3Draw and throw. Each turn draw from the deck and throw one card. For the first three times round the table, that is all anyone does.
  4. 4Open with 51. Lay down sets and runs worth at least 51 points. After that the bar for everyone still closed is the last opening plus one.
  5. 5Sell and take jokers. Once open, lay cards off on any combination on the table, and give the card a joker stands for to take the joker back.
  6. 6Close — or hunt. Lay everything down and throw your last card to close the round. Do it all at once without having opened and it is a hunt: -140 for you, double for everyone else.

Zhol — frequently asked questions

How many players can play Zhol?

Two to six. It is dealt from two packs plus four jokers.

What does opening with 51 mean?

The first time you lay cards on the table your combinations together must be worth at least 51 points — numbers their value, aces and face cards ten, a joker whatever card it stands for. Each opening raises the bar for the players still closed to that opening plus one.

What is a hunt?

Going out in a single turn without having opened before, with no help from the table — no discard picked up and nothing laid off. The hunter scores -140, anyone who never opened pays 200, and everyone else pays double their hand. The card under the deck can only ever be taken for a hunt.

How do jokers work in Zhol?

There are four, and each stands for any card, keeping its place once it is on the table. Hold the card a joker stands for in a run and you can swap it for the joker; in a set you have to complete all four suits. A joker still in your hand at the close costs 25.

How is the score worked out?

The closer scores -40, players who never opened pay 100, and everyone else pays the cards in their hand. After seven rounds the lowest total wins.
